And the Winners are…

The results are in for the seventh annual photo contest. Hundreds of cooperative members from all over the state submitted their entries. Scroll down the page to see if your entry is a winner. The judges had a fun time viewing all the photos. Each judge chose the top five entries in their category. Then, they met at the New Mexico Rural Electric Cooperative Association to choose the grand prize winner and winners in each of the three categories. Winners receive $75 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place. The grand prize winner receives $100 and the photo is featured on this month’s cover. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all participants for making this year’s photo contest a success.

Chesna Smith • Raton • Springer Electric Cooperative

Grand Prize: Duty Calls

Smith took this photo of Martin Franz who was riding out in the morning light to help gather cattle for spring branding at the Baird Ranch near Clayton. The photo captures the trust and respect between the cowboy and his horse remark the judges. A true cowboy. Hats off to all the hard working cattlemen and women they say.

Duty Calls

1st Place

1st Place: Duty Calls

Jeanette Everett • Clovis • Farmers' Electric Cooperative

Emanuel Rodreguez, who is a tire tech for C&J Tire in Portales, repairs a tire. It’s a great close-up photo, say the judges. It’s like you’re right there working with Rodreguez on the tire.

2nd Place

2nd Place: Duty Calls

Judy Underwood • Timberon • Otero County Electric Cooperative

Roy Lee Gillian rounds up the calves for branding in May 2009, writes Underwood. The judges like the movement in the photo. If you look close enough, you can see how fast the lasso is turning. An enchanting photo.

3rd Place

3rd Place: Duty Calls

Rose Laumbach Monreal • Roy • Springer Electric Cooperative

Steve is shoeing a horse and the one to the left is waiting to take a bite out of Steve, writes Laumbach Monreal. She calls this photo, “When Is It My Turn.” This photo is very funny, the judges say. What is the horse on the right thinking?

Fun Times

1st Place

3rd Place: Duty Calls

Joe Clavel • Roy • Springer Electric Cooperative

While we were cleaning a stock tank, the grandkids decided to get in and have a mud fight, writes Clavel. This is part of growing up and having fun, say the judges.

2nd Place

2nd Place: Duty Calls

Karen Bingham • Pie Town • Socorro Electric Cooperative

This is Bobbi Jo Bingham near the Pieoneer Cafe in Pie Town just before going to the Halloween carnival in Datil last year. What a surprise to see a witch shadow in the photo, say the judges. Does the witch get the ballerina? It reminds them of the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale.

3rd Place

3rd Place: Duty Calls

Carol Caldwell • San Acacia • Socorro Electric Cooperative

Uncle Lucky Lew Caldwell and his niece, Kalynn Darras, make Christmas cookies in Grandma Jean Johnson’s kitchen. Life is so fast paced these days. It’s nice to see family spending quality time together, the judges say.

Kicking Back

1st Place

1st Place: Duty Calls

Danielle Trapp • Capitan • Otero County Electric Cooperative

A nice fall day in our front yard. Torri, Dalton and Dillon watch horses graze, writes Trapp. The judges like the beauty and serene moment of the photo. Without the horses in the photo, one tends to wonder what the children are staring at, the judges remark.

2nd Place

1st Place: Duty Calls

Gerald Garrett • Capitan • Otero County Electric Cooperative

Dalton Trapp and Wyatt Griffin enjoy the Lincoln County Ranch Rodeo and each other’s company as they munch on ears of corn, writes Garrett. The judges say this is an All-American photo that speaks for itself.

3rd Place

3rd Place

Pat S. Martinez • Springer • Springer Electric Cooperative

Springer Electric Cooperative Gonzalo Carbajal had gone with friends to Chimayo. In the area they came across the “White Burro.” The burro eyes Carbajal’s lunch. It looks like two old buddies having a conversation, say the judges.
